A Dream Of Song (Poetry)
21st July 2019
It was a dream of song —
of someone singing — some sweet crooner
on a record spinning — slightly tinny
as they used to sound back when
I lived some other life
In the dream I knew the words —
familiar lyrics to the heart
and the melody was popular
played often — scoring high
on whatever was the day’s
romantic chart
A snatch of soundtrack — meaningful
the tender catchphrase lingered
just four words remembered from
perhaps a love scene acted long ago
nothing else recalled
except for that. The sentimental tune
and sense of who and why and when
defy retrieval. But for the refrain
there the record sticks — he sings again
“You are my everything ...”
of someone singing — some sweet crooner
on a record spinning — slightly tinny
as they used to sound back when
I lived some other life
In the dream I knew the words —
familiar lyrics to the heart
and the melody was popular
played often — scoring high
on whatever was the day’s
romantic chart
A snatch of soundtrack — meaningful
the tender catchphrase lingered
just four words remembered from
perhaps a love scene acted long ago
nothing else recalled
except for that. The sentimental tune
and sense of who and why and when
defy retrieval. But for the refrain
there the record sticks — he sings again
“You are my everything ...”
