A Lack Of Goodwill (Poetry)

Now the Oscars can never be the same

So, you didn’t get a gold star on your homework
and your momma’s gone complaining to the Head.
Now the whole school knows her little boy’s been crying —
But would you really want the ‘pity’ prize, instead?

Well, some smart kid’s got all the teacher’s praises
and come top of the class: you didn’t win.
But you got a solid A on your report card
so accept you just weren’t quite as good as him.

Your turn will come — in time. It’s dumb to force it.
True talent has a way of shining through.
Meanwhile, cheer loud and be a generous loser
or risk the other kids might blackball you.
