A Room Somewhere (Poetry)
16th April 2023
What made me dream of that small room
familiar and yet strange?
And why so vivid — photo-sharp
to haunt the waking brain
with nagging questions half the day? —
It made so little sense
a wooden table, chairs set round
no clue to what it meant
Just one old-fashioned china cup
brown-patterned — worn but clean
upon the table’s oaken top
no others to be seen
An air of waiting like a cloud
for something to begin
but no one came and nothing moved
the lamplight filtered dim ...
Perspective shifted — I became
divided from myself
and who I was was far from clear
the room held someone else
who left me with this memory
I’m certain can’t be mine
it has the feel of long ago —
years before my time
familiar and yet strange?
And why so vivid — photo-sharp
to haunt the waking brain
with nagging questions half the day? —
It made so little sense
a wooden table, chairs set round
no clue to what it meant
Just one old-fashioned china cup
brown-patterned — worn but clean
upon the table’s oaken top
no others to be seen
An air of waiting like a cloud
for something to begin
but no one came and nothing moved
the lamplight filtered dim ...
Perspective shifted — I became
divided from myself
and who I was was far from clear
the room held someone else
who left me with this memory
I’m certain can’t be mine
it has the feel of long ago —
years before my time
