A Tale Of The Sea (Poetry)

14th July 2013
In a town too small for strangers
every face records the shock —
a fishing boat’s long overdue,
vanished from its spot.

Still expectant, the horizon
presses thin pale clouds
and the sea bobs brown and empty,
tells nothing of the loss.

Search and salvage reap no comfort
but there’s a need to know
what happened, piece together
their fate and bring them home.

Boys they were, and kinsmen
by blood and friendship bound,
and Death’s the last adventure
they shared away from land.

Plucked from the cold seabed,
the enigmatic wreck remains
clueless — what might explain
two drifting empty life rafts?

Officials will mull over, take due time,
vault across the unknown gaps
and decide on what to tell.
They’ll write the end.
