A Vintage Christmas (Poetry)

11th December 2022
If only I could
I would recapture
that long-ago glow
present in childhood
as Christmas drew near

In those weeks before
the giddy flurry
of preparations
made it quite simply
the best time of year

The making of things —
cards, decorations
fetching home holly
and hoping for snow
from a night sky clear

where a million stars
promise that it’s true —
magic’s in the air
spreading all around
a sense of good cheer

I wish to relive
a child’s pure gladness
enjoy the season
doing once again
things my heart holds dear
