A Voice From The Darkness (Poetry)

01st February 2016
For Terry Wogan

Some day, maybe, I’ll turn the dial again
and find you — your so-familiar voice
breaking through the multi-layered static

for I dream that signal’s out there —
bouncing back and forth between the planets
while the whole universe is turning
                                        and tuning in
to those good old songs from the sixties
                                        the seventies remembered
and the banter still trips smoothly
from your tongue.

Out there — floating ocean-deep in space
there’s a never-ending wavelength
reaching all who can receive and want to listen
they’ll catch your top o’ the morning greeting
that somehow parts their darkness — filters through
even where there is no night or day
and time means nothing
all the while warm human sounds persist —
                                        words and music mix
to soothe the empty ache
and give a shape to each fond echo
from every broadcast that exists
                                        beyond the range men think
anyone can hear.
