About Anything (Poetry)
26th March 2023
A good poet should
be able to write
about anything —
clouds or corn plasters
football or cooking
A good poet knows
nothing is taboo
beauty can be found
almost anywhere
it just needs an eye
and a clever pen
to tease out the words
but I will admit
that’s easier said
than skilfully done
Most of us prefer
middle-of-the-road
well-tried and tested
subjects for our art
not too off the wall
Yet while saying that
there might once have been
a profound ‘ode to
pink paper clips’ but
who remembers it?
be able to write
about anything —
clouds or corn plasters
football or cooking
A good poet knows
nothing is taboo
beauty can be found
almost anywhere
it just needs an eye
and a clever pen
to tease out the words
but I will admit
that’s easier said
than skilfully done
Most of us prefer
middle-of-the-road
well-tried and tested
subjects for our art
not too off the wall
Yet while saying that
there might once have been
a profound ‘ode to
pink paper clips’ but
who remembers it?
