your collected works speak
eloquently enough without
the slightest need for
selfconscious-sounding
lengthy explanations

Why clutter with confession —
adding what is unnecessary
to a book of poems
like a diary
that doesn’t require any
form of preface?

The information’s already here —
as much as any reader might
think pertinent
to a narrative that spans
a writing life

How many ways are there
to bare a soul?
How many coy excuses for
the loves enjoyed and lost?

Your poems do the better job
so give them room
let them tell your tale
