Ad Infinitum (Poetry)
07th April 2019
It’s so very nice to see you
my handsome one-time lover
it’s been an age — the years have flown
you’re looking well but older
Your bright smile’s the same as ever
but your blue eyes now seem greyer
and there’s hesitation in your voice
some flaw to cloud each layer
So I wonder if you’re happy
or discontented with your life
did you find what you were seeking —
the ideal home and perfect wife?
It’s really wonderful to see you
I dream of you quite often
remembering how we used to be
my heart can’t help but soften ...
I won’t say how much I’ve missed you
can’t count the times you cross my mind
while the world spins on and leaves us
by the wayside — miles behind
I can’t ask you if you’re happy
but I pick up on telltale signs
there’s no gold ring on your finger
so I read between the lines
Well, great to see you — but ironic
how Fate decrees we meet again
when, as before, you’re heading Northwards
and I’m on the Southbound train
Please don’t ask me if I’m happy
simply wave me on my way
I’ll just continue quietly missing you
ad infinitum ... from today
my handsome one-time lover
it’s been an age — the years have flown
you’re looking well but older
Your bright smile’s the same as ever
but your blue eyes now seem greyer
and there’s hesitation in your voice
some flaw to cloud each layer
So I wonder if you’re happy
or discontented with your life
did you find what you were seeking —
the ideal home and perfect wife?
It’s really wonderful to see you
I dream of you quite often
remembering how we used to be
my heart can’t help but soften ...
I won’t say how much I’ve missed you
can’t count the times you cross my mind
while the world spins on and leaves us
by the wayside — miles behind
I can’t ask you if you’re happy
but I pick up on telltale signs
