Against Negativity (Poetry)
13th September 2026
I used to have this idea —
hung on to it for years
convinced that everything
would come right in the end
It didn’t seem that fanciful
and it was kind of soothing
imagining bad times would
eventually come good
But time is going on —
the sand slipping through
life’s relentless hour glass
at an alarming rate
And it has to be said
nothing is getting any better
most things are worse
and hope is fading
It is a great shame when such certainty
deserts us — we should all die
still believing in Santa Claus, angels and fairies
and that someone somewhere has always
truly loved us for ourselves
hung on to it for years
convinced that everything
would come right in the end
It didn’t seem that fanciful
and it was kind of soothing
imagining bad times would
eventually come good
But time is going on —
the sand slipping through
life’s relentless hour glass
at an alarming rate
And it has to be said
nothing is getting any better
most things are worse
and hope is fading
It is a great shame when such certainty
deserts us — we should all die
still believing in Santa Claus, angels and fairies
and that someone somewhere has always
truly loved us for ourselves
