Alice Speaks In Old Age (Poetry)

10th January 2021
I don’t wish to live in this world
with its harsh and greedy ways
Man has broken every promise ever made
For years I’ve dreamed a better place
to spend my share of days
and mapped it clear before it starts to fade

I have no doubt that some will think
old age has turned my mind
they nod and most indulge me for a while
I hear them whisper, catch the wink
and I know why they smile
it’s obvious they’re trying to be kind

This world might be enough for those
who have no need to dream
reality the only state they know
without imagination
and quite content they seem
to play their part in life’s rewardless show

But I escape to Wonderland
it’s not too far from here
the rabbit hole’s a tried and tested route
so come, dear reader, take my hand
Time races in pursuit
shrug off this world — a better one waits near
