All In A Blink (Poetry)

20th April 2025
Midnight’s claimed my bedroom window
where the shapes along the sill
loom too large from out the darkness
figures frozen cold and still

They’re familiar in the daytime
but the moonlight casts a spell
so the silhouettes hold menace
though the reason’s hard to tell

It’s like they’re waiting for the moment
when I close sleep-heavy eyes
then they’ll change their strange positions
and shrug off the magic’s guise

For they could well be enchanted
creatures turned to wood or stone
and their dreams about escaping
might get tangled with my own

Shadows stretch and draw in closer
as each black-winged minute flies
nothing’s moved — the room is silent
tiredness throbs behind my eyes ...

All in a blink the night is over
here’s the shock — I stare and stare
as grey the dawnlight spills so softly
along a sill entirely bare
