Almost Biblical (Poetry)

16th April 2023
They did forecast storms
so we were prepared
for the hot weather
to suddenly break
release the tension

They were not wrong. The
first clap of thunder
surely woke the dead
like Armageddon
in some epic film

it shook the landscape
ripped a hole through night
as though somewhere far
a trumpet sounded
and horses galloped ...

Sky sucked in its breath
the dark shivered — stretched
anticipating
where the blow might fall
counting through the gaps

Silence found the dawn
vague and wandering
dulled by the trauma
we drink tea surprised
the trees are still there
