Almost Good As New (Poetry)
16th April 2023
Some dizzy time ago
I gave my heart away
but I got it back today
a little worse for careless wear
and now back where it belongs
the meaning of love’s old songs
warms me again
I can feel my blood flow
I gave it away in haste
not thinking in terms of waste
nor the likelihood of loss
or pain — the misery and cost
of life without its beat
the ache of seeming incomplete
a certain lack of heat
and modest joys misplaced
Back together now
and almost good as new
I make a solemn vow
in future to take more care
to never leave it anywhere
risky or unattended
for fear of damage too severe
to ever be mended
I gave my heart away
but I got it back today
a little worse for careless wear
and now back where it belongs
the meaning of love’s old songs
warms me again
I can feel my blood flow
I gave it away in haste
not thinking in terms of waste
nor the likelihood of loss
or pain — the misery and cost
of life without its beat
the ache of seeming incomplete
a certain lack of heat
and modest joys misplaced
Back together now
and almost good as new
I make a solemn vow
in future to take more care
to never leave it anywhere
risky or unattended
for fear of damage too severe
to ever be mended
