Alone At Last (Poetry)
06th September 2015
We could, you know, have grabbed the chance
and become lovers.
We could have dived, we could have swum —
danced all night, kissed in the sun.
Ignored the feelings of others ...
Instead, we did the decent thing — denied ourselves
a guilty fling.
We looked away, denied we saw
that thrill we’d both been aching for
and pinned desire’s dark wing ...
Hollow since, dull years slip past — time escapes
once slow, now fast.
I dream about you — find asleep
age has us shackled, drifting deep.
Alone at last.
and become lovers.
We could have dived, we could have swum —
danced all night, kissed in the sun.
Ignored the feelings of others ...
Instead, we did the decent thing — denied ourselves
a guilty fling.
We looked away, denied we saw
that thrill we’d both been aching for
and pinned desire’s dark wing ...
Hollow since, dull years slip past — time escapes
once slow, now fast.
I dream about you — find asleep
age has us shackled, drifting deep.
Alone at last.
