As We Were (Poetry)
28th December 2014
It’s a marvel to think we were ever that youthful and free
I picture you then and I wonder — do you picture me?
We were careless and crazy in love — life had barely begun
and we traded our hearts like our minds had been touched
by the sun.
What did we know of the future — how fast the years fly?
How sweet flowers all fade — petals wither too soon and so die.
We talked of forever — a word with no measure of time
when the pleasures we stole seemed the least of our innocent crime.
I dream of you sometimes — my memory keeps you the same
and you’ll always stay twenty if I never see you again.
Should a passing thought cause you to wonder these long years
between
then I hope you imagine a girl who is still seventeen.
