At a Distance (Poetry)
04th August 2006
She is sometimes more angles than curves -
more shadows than skin -
it's as though she draws herself in,
softness protected and rolled
while the sharpness of elbows and chin
jab at the air in defence -
bone sheer as blades jutting clear
and forbidding the camera too near.
Less often she shines from afar -
draws the eye into her plane
where adoring light circles in awe,
pulsing - a cool-burning star
unconscious of how she attracts
and unsettles what's dormant, unnerves
with demands to be noticed - observes
at a distance the nature of fame.
more shadows than skin -
it's as though she draws herself in,
softness protected and rolled
while the sharpness of elbows and chin
jab at the air in defence -
bone sheer as blades jutting clear
and forbidding the camera too near.
Less often she shines from afar -
draws the eye into her plane
where adoring light circles in awe,
pulsing - a cool-burning star
unconscious of how she attracts
and unsettles what's dormant, unnerves
with demands to be noticed - observes
at a distance the nature of fame.
