Back Into the Darkness (Poetry)
15th November 2009
For Frodo Boddington
Back into the darkness now
the day is at an end
that light has faded in your eye
no tremble in you sends
a hope that lingers as you lie
so still — unblinking — lost
to us who watch and dread the night —
its cold unfeeling frost.
Gone — into that other land
no sun — no moon — no stars —
a country with no shape we know
far-off — yet close to ours
where all are blind — rocked to and fro
in some unmeasured space
deep and wide — your shadow seeks
that dim and distant place.
Drawn into that darkness — gone
now night has claimed you back
breathless — instinct leads the way
no need for any map
you’ll find your hollow in the clay
where earth will love you round
and nurture death and life as one —
held safe beneath the ground.
