Background Information (Poetry)

22nd April 2019
We came from different backgrounds
plotted on some social graph
with no point of crossing over —
future, present tense, or past
with whole oceans that divided
your more famous life from mine
and almost a generation
separated us in time
yet I felt this strong connection
being charmed to hear your voice
and I loved you down the decades
like I hadn’t any choice

I read poetry and novels —
anything that bore your name
while your greatest hits were playing
and the magic stayed the same
those years like an express train
rushing through the station’s heart
as I loitered on some platform
never eager to depart
and I thought about you often
for your songs lived in my head
and you hardly got much older
it was me that aged instead

Then I bought a later album —
so much darker than the rest
and I listened like a junkie
quite convinced the deal was blessed
but within a month of getting high
I heard you’d passed away
and coming down so broke my heart
I’ve lost all will to pray
Though we hail from different backgrounds
certain questions rise the same
when diving starlit fathoms deep
in search of love’s true name
