Backwards And Forwards (Poetry)

There is no looking forward now
the time for that is past
what plans I had all came to nought
such dreams not meant to last

It’s taken much too long to learn
the way things really are
If I’d have known the truth back then
before I’d come this far

I would have chosen other goals
and dreamt a different dream
so lived a more fulfilling life
than this poor one would seem

And yet it’s had the odd glad ray
of sun I can’t deny
but all too soon dark clouds rolled in
and blotted once-blue sky

If I’d one pearl of wisdom to
impart to a young ear
I’d say forget the future and
just take life year by year

Grab each new opportunity
that comes along the way
for happiness and make the most
of every single day

Live for the now and don’t regret
too much — what’s done is done
enjoy whatever time you’ve got
for when it’s gone it’s gone
