Best Friend (Poetry)

I was your best friend
for a while your only friend
I fought off demons
while you were sleeping sound
you never knew what dragons came.

I’m always at your side
invisible and closer than you dream
I am your best friend still
I carry you — protect you
with my spells of mother-love.

I’ll be your best friend
whatever happens that will never change
despite the distance that has grown
the years that stretch unspoken
the world will disappoint you
but I won’t let you down.
