Beyond Some Hill (Poetry)

24th March 2019
If I ever had a master plan
it’s long gone off the rails
the sun that burned so fiercely once
grows dim — the moon she pales

The stars I used to plot my course
are hidden in dense cloud
the seas I dreamed I’d sail across
stretch sullen and unploughed

The route I chose diverted down
some strange unfriendly track
that twisted round to no-mans-land —
not mentioned on my map

I’ve wandered through the wilderness
and looked for one clear sign
that destiny might guide me through
the desert labelled mine

I journey still, my compass gone
while instinct seeks the north
the sands are running through my head
and habit sends me forth

I’m lost — I have no clue to where
on earth I’m meant to be
so set my sights beyond some hill
imagining I’m free
