Book Early For Christmas (Poetry)

We need to book early for Christmas
we have to get everything done
remember to order the turkey
and frozen mince pies by the ton

We must make another ‘to-do’ list
it’s never too soon to begin
and booking ahead is less stressful
than finding no room at the inn

It seems every year there is plenty
of time — but then time gets away
and the race at the end is so frantic
we’re pooped when it comes to the day

So let’s do a thorough appraisal
and get it down to a fine art
already we’re partway through August
so high time that we made a start

We’ll send off the cards in September
as Second Class speeds like a snail
for gifts Amazon is the answer
their couriers beat the Royal Mail

But if shops in the town should be open
with no tedious lockdown in force
we might browse around for some bargains
and support local business of course

We need to be ready for Christmas
though it comes only once every year
should we dither or wait we’ll find it’s too late
and the blesséd thing’s already here!
