Boxing Day Blues (Poetry)

29th December 2021
Now
everything’s gone flat —
the fizz evaporated
and the shine has dulled
along with daylight’s fade
the dizzy-dancing glad parade
of merrymaking every year
tradition’s ration of good cheer
exhausted — cracker-jokes all told
the barrel’s empty — joy turns cold

A shadow of its festive self
a weary yawn-filled Yuletide elf
the sparkle’s gone
it’s grey outside
and drizzle falls
so time to draw
the curtains on it all
and
strike a match — admire
the candle’s modest golden fire
and imagine pictures
like old movies that flicker
silently in the flame
