Breast To Breast (Poetry)

16th June 2015
This is the last night, my old friend
that we shall spend together.
I’ll miss you, but it’s time for you to go.
We’ve been a couple — how long?
Looking back, it seems forever
but, before you leave, I think
that you should know
it’s been a pleasure having you
beside me through those stages
from puberty, maternity and such
you’ve done your share of holding up
despite the drag of ages
you’ve always done your best to fill your cup.

But now you’re sick and fate decrees
it’s time that we were parted.
There are no words to say
how sad I feel
and it’s no consolation but
I’m truly broken-hearted —
the hurt is deep
and some wounds never heal.

So, goodbye sweet breast — my bosom twin
I trust the surgeon’s knife
is merciful and severance is swift
while I go on remembering
until the end of life
the curve of you — your subtle bounce and shift.
And should I opt to ease the loss
and re-create us two
be sure there’s no synthetic flesh
could take the place of you.
