Burial At Sea (Poetry)
12th December 2023
I found you floating
glazed eyes wide open
and staring upwards
with almost a smile
on your salt-caked lips
How far you’d drifted
moon-drunk and crazy
going with the flow
of that warm night’s tide
was anyone’s guess
You looked so peaceful
like drowning eased you
it seemed a shame to
haul you from the foam
and disturb your death
I took one deep breath
touched your waxy skin
noticed how your hair
fanned out halo-like
gold on the water
I couldn’t take you
from your element
the sea should keep its
curiosities
the tide dragged you home
glazed eyes wide open
and staring upwards
with almost a smile
on your salt-caked lips
How far you’d drifted
moon-drunk and crazy
going with the flow
of that warm night’s tide
was anyone’s guess
You looked so peaceful
like drowning eased you
it seemed a shame to
haul you from the foam
and disturb your death
I took one deep breath
touched your waxy skin
noticed how your hair
fanned out halo-like
gold on the water
I couldn’t take you
from your element
the sea should keep its
curiosities
the tide dragged you home
