(A Term For Plainspeak)

Long ago I gave
up trying to be
clever or profound
deciding plain truth
was the safer ground

I chose simple words
those used every day
so my meaning’s clear
communication
open and sincere

There is far too much
obscure literature
few can understand
I’ve no desire to
join that puffed-up band

They’re too elitist
and intellectual
for the common taste
hefty great doorstops
language gone to waste

Best keep things basic
ditch the flowery frills
call a spade a spade
not a manually
employed digging aid
