C-Listers Unite (Poetry)

19th September 2021
I was never on the A-list —
not for anything
I must admit I missed the B-list
too
When picking teams I was the one
not called upon
Unchosen then and now —
it’s nothing new

No pressure to be brilliant
or to take the lead
for who is there to notice?
No one cares
or takes account of lesser mortals —
status-free —
way too ordinary to climb
life’s starlit stairs

But some of us born patient simply
bide our time
We’re certain in the end our chance
will come
The revolution’s slow — the seething pot
will boil
and prove the underdog is not
so dumb

While A-listers are resting on their laurels
smug and rich
the B-listers suck-up to those
in power
Not one pays much attention to the whispers
running round
while the rebels grow more restless
by the hour

It’s on the way — there is no doubt
it’s overdue —
a few have had their say for
far too long
Democracy is coming — time to change
the tune —
check Dylan and see Cohen’s
marching song

So join the C-list — all you clique-
excluded souls
who know the old boy network is
to blame
let’s bend their sorry rules around — kick
the deadwood out
step up and get ourselves back in
the game
