Cat Among the Daisies (Poetry)
30th October 2016
Slave to the mild caresses of the sun
curled on a corner of soft grass
he lies oblivious among
the daisies — floating on a raft
that drifts untroubled on green seas
where an old cat’s fond imaginings
might take him totally at ease
eyes closed his body sometimes twitching
to whatever dreams of fish
or mice or other lively prey
appear in answer to a feline’s passing wish —
some recollection from more active kitten days.
He quietly slumbers — aging and content
ignoring squirrels and the odd bold bird
exploring close. Cat’s need to hunt long-spent —
it’s too much effort now. He doesn’t even stir.
