Childhood's Garden (Poetry)

14th May 2023
I’m walking in the garden of
a distant memory
and I have that kind of feeling
it means such a lot to me
to wander there at random with
the sun warm on my back
and a vaguely happy notion
I pursue some secret track

It’s a place of small adventures
where the child in me still goes
full of wondrous possibilities
a questing spirit knows
will while away the hours lost
within such lands of play
found close enough for teatime’s call
yet somehow far away ...

So half-in-dream and half-awake
the mind goes drifting there
to seek the touchstone left behind
when days held not one care
the future seemed exciting then ...

now old imagination strays
each chance it gets — meanders back
through childhood’s unspoilt ways
