Christmas Is Coming (Poetry)
09th September 2019
Christmas is coming
though we’ve hardly had a break
the summer bargains barely over
high street profits are at stake
But Christmas is coming
who among us gives a jot?
as we’re jollied into spending
all the credit we have got
We trade plastic for more plastic —
made-in-China baubles pile
labelled ‘must haves’ — all unneeded
thrift so clearly out of style
Oh, but Christmas is coming
with merely thirteen weeks to go
grab those greetings cards and candles
picture reindeer ... dream of snow
It’s already mid-September
and commerce steers towards the date
Jingle Bells too blesséd early —
Are we children? Can’t we wait?
though we’ve hardly had a break
the summer bargains barely over
high street profits are at stake
But Christmas is coming
who among us gives a jot?
as we’re jollied into spending
all the credit we have got
We trade plastic for more plastic —
made-in-China baubles pile
labelled ‘must haves’ — all unneeded
thrift so clearly out of style
Oh, but Christmas is coming
with merely thirteen weeks to go
grab those greetings cards and candles
picture reindeer ... dream of snow
It’s already mid-September
and commerce steers towards the date
Jingle Bells too blesséd early —
Are we children? Can’t we wait?
