Clockwork (Poetry)

19th September 2021
Old Father Time unwisely
took a young unworldly wife
who always turned up late
and was the bane of his long life

The honeymoon soon over
it came as a real shock
she simply would not heed
the hands that ruled the clock

When Father Time insisted
there was no time to waste
she stubbornly resisted
refusing to make haste

Never to be rushed
she took her own sweet time
she seemed completely deaf
to the grandfather’s chime

or the solemn church bell
that tolled out the passing hours
as she strolled through the fields
picking posies of wild flowers

She judged the printed calendar
an out-of-date idea
and kept her diary pages white
so scrupulously clear

She wouldn’t wear the gold wristwatch
her anxious husband bought her
determined to ignore the things
Time itself had taught her

Old Father Time eventually
divorced his tardy spouse
now minutes tick and tock away
like clockwork in his house
