Close Your Eyes (Poetry)

21st September 2025
Did you ever think we’d vanish
like an awkward waking dream
that I’d slip away unnoticed
melting silently — unseen?

Raging passion maps its river
words so fickle ebb and flow
how I’ve braved your brutal rapids
God alone would maybe know

It has rarely been plain sailing
thunder hails a tropic storm
I’m too old to dive for treasure
thinning blood stays barely warm

We have thrilled to strange adventures
born in fiction and in flesh
we are naked to each other
all despite our fancy dress

It’s past time to close the window
thrice you’ve heard the mermaid’s song
and the hour’s here for leaving
I have tarried for too long

Love’s mad carnival is over
now you nurse a lazy wish
I will sweep away the litter
mend old damage, wash each dish

This last scene so poorly written
no surprise we type anon
close your eyes and dream of nothing
in a heartbeat I’ll be gone
