Closing Down Home Town (Poetry)

14th May 2023
Windows boarded up
post behind the door
flyers, bills and such
littering the floor
a depressing sight

A few steadfast stores
open still for trade
welcome all the more
since the laws of plague
greyed what’s black or white

Many old names lost
bankrupted, retired
stock sold off at cost
staff let go — un-hired
gone without a fight

Street by street closed down
as in silent war
home is a ghost town
protest won’t restore
lips and shutters tight

Shoppers come and go
buy what can be bought
smart consumers sow
rebel seeds of thought —
someone planned this blight
