Cold Inheritance (Poetry)

I think you’ve got the selfish gene
a present from your dad
a shame he had to pass it on.
It makes me deeply sad

for you were such a lovely child
but underneath it — sly
a trait you got from grandma
and that’s the reason why

we’ve not one thing in common.
My daughter you may be
but those cold gifts that make you mean
you never got from me.
