Colouring The Dark (Poetry)

03rd October 2021
Shapes hang about the silence
vaguely colouring the dark
a voice leaks out of nowhere
lisping nonsense fills my heart
with strange language half-familiar
how it teases — spells escape
while the moment breathes pure longing
pulled too thin and stretched too late

Imagination gathers
every fleeting wish that swims
in chill lakes a few might fathom
and the lonesome shadow skims
seeking out a star to guide it
plot the journey shore to shore
called across night’s nerveless ocean
all the gaudy dreams explore

dabbing through the rainbow palette
hue by hue — the mind takes hold
of a splash of moonlight falling
that King Midas touch of gold
as sleep’s unsure prediction
blurs the memory to blue
once-clear edges lose all meaning
not one colour will stay true
