Companion (Poetry)

14th November 2008
I miss your voice — that deep and soothing purr,
the companionable press of feline fur,
the warmth we shared, your understanding gaze
grown wise to the frustrations of old age.

Our simple conversations seemed profound —
my murmurings, your soft responsive sound
agreeable — as though you truly heard
and sympathised with every woeful word...

What human friend would sit so quiet and kind —
indulge my changing mood and frame of mind ?
These weeks of missing you convinced me that
no creature’s more empathic than a cat.
