Conversation In An Empty Room (Poetry)
14th May 2023
‘I love you’ he said
‘You don’t’ she replied
‘you never listen ...’
‘I do’ he denied
she stared straight ahead
‘Why are we fighting?’
he wanted to know
her voice then trembled
‘I wish you would go’
her words now biting
‘I don’t understand —
what have I done wrong?’
he paused, took a breath
‘You’ve strung me along —
our whole future planned ...’
‘Spare me that old song!’
she snapped, turned her back
‘Men are all the same
I’ve simply lost track
where’s the romance gone?’
‘Marry me!’he said
‘I’ve loved you for years’
She smiled, well-aware
even walls have ears
By Spring they were wed
‘You don’t’ she replied
‘you never listen ...’
‘I do’ he denied
she stared straight ahead
‘Why are we fighting?’
he wanted to know
her voice then trembled
‘I wish you would go’
her words now biting
‘I don’t understand —
