Daisies In December (Poetry)
27th January 2019
We came upon them quite by chance
one Christmas Eve when walking near
to home — the woods in quiet trance
when from the grass we saw them peer —
a patch of daisies in full bloom
as though untouched by Winter’s breath
their whiteness a small ghost of June
the fast-retreating year had left
Perhaps they’d simply missed their cue
and woken late with no idea
times change as they are wont to do
and leave all dreamers stranded here
defiant of the coming chill —
the frost, the snow, the failing light —
as flesh withstands the season’s will
so buds unfurl and brave the night
one Christmas Eve when walking near
to home — the woods in quiet trance
when from the grass we saw them peer —
a patch of daisies in full bloom
as though untouched by Winter’s breath
their whiteness a small ghost of June
the fast-retreating year had left
Perhaps they’d simply missed their cue
and woken late with no idea
times change as they are wont to do
and leave all dreamers stranded here
defiant of the coming chill —
the frost, the snow, the failing light —
as flesh withstands the season’s will
so buds unfurl and brave the night
