Dalliance (Poetry)
30th July 2006
Do not dream, foolish heart, this is more than mere fancy -
this amorous trifle's a flash in the pan -
a brief peccadillo to counteract boredom
of dutiful marriage to one dreary man.
Never think, for a moment, this passing attraction
might kindle some spark of romantic desire,
his smile may be warm and his blood even hotter
but lust fuels the flames of his thrill-hungry fire.
He is charming, attentive, a wonderful lover,
(but never too serious) eager to please
while the mood is light-hearted, giddy with kisses,
and sex is a sport played with blind referees.
You're just a notch on his belt, a moment's amusement,
a pleasant diversion, a hobby he's found
engaging, at least while the game is still novel,
this scoring of goals on another guy's ground.
If you must dip a toe in the bright pool of passion,
don't be tempted to dive, - it's a whim, nothing more, -
a pound to a penny the water runs shallow
so best keep the other foot firm on the floor.
