Dateline (Poetry)
14th May 2019
The Devil has emailed me
twice the past week
he called me his angel
his precious pet freak
he sent his regards
hoping I’m keeping well
and confirmed he has saved me
a hot seat in Hell
I’ve not heard from Jesus
for some little while
his last letter rambled
it’s in the closed file
he criticized all that
I’ve thought, said or done
then he vanished like smoke
I’m not sure where he’s gone
There’s others, unnamed
who have dropped me a line
they’re fishing for contacts
I click or decline
the wannabe lovers
the can’t-we-be-friends
the trolls and the perverts
the list never ends ...
But Big D is engaging
he writes with such charm
though I sense what he’s doing
I feel no alarm
He’s the strongest contender
persistent and fun
and although clearly wicked
he might be the one
So I’ll toss out love’s clichés
and string him along
set my own risqué words
to a world-weary song
chance a virtual adventure
I’m seatbelted tight
for a date with the Devil
we’re frying tonight
twice the past week
he called me his angel
his precious pet freak
he sent his regards
hoping I’m keeping well
and confirmed he has saved me
a hot seat in Hell
I’ve not heard from Jesus
for some little while
his last letter rambled
it’s in the closed file
he criticized all that
I’ve thought, said or done
then he vanished like smoke
I’m not sure where he’s gone
There’s others, unnamed
who have dropped me a line
they’re fishing for contacts
I click or decline
the wannabe lovers
the can’t-we-be-friends
the trolls and the perverts
the list never ends ...
But Big D is engaging
he writes with such charm
though I sense what he’s doing
I feel no alarm
He’s the strongest contender
persistent and fun
and although clearly wicked
he might be the one
So I’ll toss out love’s clichés
and string him along
set my own risqué words
to a world-weary song

I’m seatbelted tight
for a date with the Devil
