Defying Analysis (Poetry)

15th April 2019
It astounds me how
they hang on to your coat-tails
had your wings not been invisible
they would have plucked them
to discover how you flew
and if, indeed, you were quite mortal

Angel-speak confused them —
those allusions they fought hard
to classify
Oh-so-serious they studied
and thus somehow missed
the tongue-in-cheek sharp twinkle
in your eye

They are still debating
for they’ve never known for certain
who you were
and while the dead can’t speak
in self-defence
truth’s quick sword cuts through
time’s fraying knots
Yet old love’s ties renew —
the legend floats on fame’s mystique
                                intangibly secure
