Despite The Years (Poetry)

I fell in love with all the boys
who fell in love with me
I didn’t think how complicated
it might prove to be

All the petty jealousies
possessiveness and such
I never dreamed those little loves
would count for very much

Yet one romance that had no strings
tugs long and hard of late
surprising how the smallest things
can suddenly create

a wistfulness and longing
for a kiss I half-recall
despite the years of absence
when I missed him not at all
