Detours of the Heart (Poetry)

30th March 2008
If you should sense me wander from love’s path —
and fear why I have left the straight and true —
do not despair and think I’ve lost the way
if for a while I’m lost to view —
it’s just some whim I need explore —
a flight of fancy — nothing more.

And yes, from time to time I’m tempted by
intriguing crossroads branching either side —
the lush green lanes that beckon, urge my feet
to detour, linger, eyes grown wide
with wonder. Yet I’m never far —
I’m always close to where you are.

This gypsy heart is ever-faithful in its way —
its map is full of turnings — there’s no cure
for curiosity and freedom needs
its space. Of this you can be sure —
whatever route I choose, the same is true —
each road eventually leads home to you.
