Dressing Down (Poetry)

25th August 2006
Consider the small Peppered Moth —
its sooty-wall deceit
fools well potential predators,
its camouflage discreet
in mimicing the city’s smut —
how downright smart is that
to dress to suit prevailing trends,
perfect a colour match
environmentally correct —
dirt-grey pastiche of grime —
long-studied art that mirrors life
and stands the test of time...

And so survives the Peppered Moth,
its instinct well-endowed,
for insects know it’s seldom bright
to stand out in a crowd.
