Expectations (Poetry)

These days I don’t expect too much
or believe all I’ve been told
for when it comes to checking out —
some wonder to behold
it’s too often not as wonderful
as I’d been led to think
and the weight of disappointment makes
both heart and spirits sink

Oh it’s easy to be critical
and hardly difficult to fault
while being strictly honest is
a bonus to exhault
sometimes some moderation
of description is required
to avoid that ‘let down’ feeling
when reality’s transpired

and the ‘fabulous’ proves ordinary
the ‘stunning’ fails to awe
while claims like ‘true original’
I’ve seen at least ten times before
then there comes the odd exception —
something modest in its way
turns out better than I dared to hope
and really makes my day!
