Fair Warning (Poetry)

31st March 2019
War’s surely coming one day soon
and the placid man will fight
with pen and patriotic tune
sing out for what is right

Unease pollutes the freeman’s air
democracy’s long-dead
there’s plastic plastic everywhere
and no way out ahead

The anarchists sit in the pub
the blind man taps his stick
they add more additives to grub
and more and more get sick

Another leader will get shot
some government will fail
they’ll reinforce the law on pot
and send us all to jail

It’s no surprise it gets you down —
the state the world is in
when war’s the only game in town
you have to play to win

So cheat and lie, then cheat again
like politicians do
for honesty’s flushed down the drain
along with conscience, too

We’ve been at peace a lifetime now
with no relief in sight
so long that we’ve forgotten how
to dig in hard and fight

A civil war is on the way
Joe Public’s had enough
the signs are there it’s fair to say
it’s bound to turn out rough
