Fallen From Grace (Poetry)

25th June 2019
Kings will have their favourites
princes have their sport
knights will fight their contests
so history has taught

The years have rung few changes
in any way that counts —
the bloodstock and the breeding —
the colour of their mounts

Men have not changed their thinking
their purpose still the same
more money and more power
a life of greed and gain

Philanthropists grow weary —
they swim against the tide
mere goodness seems so dreary
when few line up beside

The city suits have spoken
the bankers dig more graves
for promises long-broken
new lies roll in in waves

The self-made kings of commerce
play dirty for their cause
and the media spread glory —
suck up with wide applause

The favourite’s smile turns nervous
the sportsmen fix the game
a dead knight’s stripped of honour
he can’t deny the blame
