Far Out Of Reach (Poetry)

05th May 2019
He was the kind of man she could have loved —
a quiet man with humour in his soul
a poet in his heart with tender words
and songs to mend the spirit — make it whole

He had the sort of voice that promised truth
his mellow tones so soothing to her ear
he hypnotized — unknowing and remote
in some world spinning far away from here

He had the type of life she could have lived
revolving her pale moon around his sun
she listened to his lyrics every night
and knew, for her, he was the only one

Yet there was more than miles for her to cross
a darker kind of barrier appeared
to keep her from this man she might have loved
if destiny had kindly engineered

a meeting where their different paths had touched
a fluke of circumstance — a lucky break
where something magical had come to pass
a miracle designed for love’s own sake

He was her kings of hearts — her lord of lords
defender of her honour dreamed in dreams
’til Death came calling brandishing cruel swords
and so put paid to fantasy’s wild schemes

The news came on a dull November day
and nothing had prepared her for such pain
she joined a silent order the next spring
and never yearned for any man again
