Fly-By-Night (Poetry)
04th July 2023
I saw him on the cliff top
handsome dark and tall
I held my breath a moment
afraid that he might fall
Then I saw unfurling
caught in the moon’s blue light
wings like some rare angel’s
magnificent and white
A leap and he was rising
through the night’s cool air
then vanished in an eye-blink
so I’d have doubted he’d been there
except for one pure feather
that floated to my hand
like he’d meant for me to have it
since he’d seen me on the strand ...
*****
I saw him next in Tesco
I swear blind that it was him
so tall and dark and handsome
with his kind of knowing grin
Of course I cannot prove it
but I’m practically sure
his companion called him Icarus
as she steered him out the door
handsome dark and tall
I held my breath a moment
afraid that he might fall
Then I saw unfurling
caught in the moon’s blue light
wings like some rare angel’s
magnificent and white
A leap and he was rising
through the night’s cool air
then vanished in an eye-blink
so I’d have doubted he’d been there
except for one pure feather
that floated to my hand
like he’d meant for me to have it
since he’d seen me on the strand ...
